It is inspiration; it is genetics, or even a legacy. But children often imbibe a lot of their parent’s interests, even going to be big in the same careers. Of course, musicians aren’t excluded from this universal rule. While we may worry that our favourites are growing old, they are also leaving behind a legacy of their music, often reviving it with their own children.
Here are examples of where musicians and their equally-talented progeny have worked together or stepped in for each other at some point!
Frank and Nancy Sinatra Who better than another Sinatra to perform a due with The Sinatra himself? Both Frank and his daughter Nancy came together to sing an enchanting duet, Something Stupid…, which is still a timeless classic, with their intertwining voices still standing testament to the vocal skills that made the Sinatras a global phenomenon.
Ozzy and Kelly Osbourne You’d know them as the reality show family, but metal fans know that the Osbourne dad-daughter duo is much more that. Though it first seemed kike all that Ozzy’s daughter inherited from him was the rebellion and the madness, their duet on the 1972 Black Sabbath song Changes…, showed that Kelly sure got the vocal chords too!
Anoushka and Ravi Shankar There would perhaps be no better-known father-daughter duo from the Indian subcontinent. Having played at Woodstock, Ravi Shankar has easily established himself as a counter-culture icon, bringing the magic of the sitar to the west. While daughter Anoushka too has been on the same trip, recently dovetailing flamenco music with her Indian classical traditions.
Paul and James McCartney Now, if you think living up to your successful parent is stressful, try being born to one of the Beatles! While Julian Lennon and Dhani Harrisson have taken off on their fathers’ tangents, young James McCartney (who is a spitting image of his old man) is the latest addition to the honour roll and he’s proved to have inherited from Mr McCartney himself!
Steve and Lauryn Harris Anyone who had attended the second edition of English metallers Iron Maiden’s live gig in India would also have noticed founding member and guitarist Steven Harris’s daughter Laurryn Harris rip the stage up with her straight and heavy riffs. One of the most common father-daughter combination on the live stage, Harris and his girl have rarely been on stage together for the same act.
John and Jason Bonham To be fair, John Bonham was too young when his father died. Nevertheless, the son of Led Zeppelin’s John Bonham, always knew that his place was with his father’s former band mates. And John, now grown up and with a band and family of his own, stepped into his father’s shoes when Led Zeppelin decided to reunite after almost two decades of hibernation, back in 2007.
Steve and Amanda Boisen While maintaining a career as a jazz bassist, Florida-based musician Steve Boisen was quietly searching for the right voice to breathe life into his original compositions. He finally discovered the sound he was looking for — the voice of his own daughter, Amanda. By combining their vocal and instrumental talents, diverse songwriting ability and a mutual love for the surprisingly versatile ukulele, they became The Barnkickers, a wholly unique father-daughter musical duo.
